Photography Facilities

We have a large black and white darkroom with 13 enlargers catering for dish processing, and a separate colour darkroom with machine print processing. Traditional photographic techniques are catered for with rooms for wet processing, and washing and drying film and prints.

We have a large stock of all formats of film cameras available for loan by students: from 35mm, to 120 roll-film and 5”x4” large-format view cameras. We also have a range of digital SLRs, including high resolution digital cameras up to 22 million pixels.

Two large studios provide professional-standard facilities for a wide-range of studio-based photography whether using film or digital cameras: one equipped with a Hi-Glide ceiling track system and range of flash lighting, including specialist lighting equipment such as a RingFlash; and the other is a daylight studio with controlled lighting.

There are two digital suites, the larger of which is a dedicated digital training room – a complete iMac suite of 24 workstations. Students have access to a range of film and flatbed scanners (including the Hasselblad Flextight Scanner, which is a high-end professional film scanner), and fully colour-managed computers which are linked to the digital print room. Here, we provide digital inkjet photo printing of up to A0+ on many high quality materials, including backlit film, display banners & fine art papers. Students also have access to a specialist video editing suite, with industry-standard software.

Photo-finishing too is available, including mounting onto Foamalux PVC, card, & foamboard, and/or print-seal, lamination & hot encapsulation.

The Photography Resource Area is fully supported by a team of dedicated technicians and a technician demonstrator.
