Course Outline

Whilst many photography degrees are designed to develop students in either commercial or art applications of photography, we believe that this distinction can limit opportunities. We believe that the commercial and applied sectors want to employ practitioners who bring a difference in approach to problem solving and personal vision in addition to technical expertise. We also understand that those who choose to work within the cultural sectors have much to offer the commercial world and may seek commercial applications during their careers as artists.

This course offers you the exciting opportunity to study and produce images without division between the art and the commercial worlds. This course aims to encourage students to embrace both the inward-looking approaches of the artist and the externally-set problem solving associated with the photographic communicator, exploring the photograph within practices such as editorial, product, services and industry, performance and entertainment, communications and independent practices and art.

The student experience is one of:

• Continued personal challenge
• Care and support in educational progression
• Preparation for future practice in photography or further study
• Access to specialist equipment to produce professional images
• A flexible and transferable approach to study and career
• Real world opportunities

Course content will include:

• Working to client commissions
• The photograph in arts practices
• Photographic futures
• Tools and skills for practice
• Theoretical and cultural studies
• The photograph in visual culture
• Personal research methods
• Professional development
